Comprehensive Guide to Forms DS-261 and DS-260 for Green Card Applications

Form DS-261: Online Choice of Address and Agent
- Purpose: To choose how the Department of State communicates with you during the green card application process
- No fee to file
- Processing time: Up to three weeks
- Accessed through the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC) website: https://ceac.state.gov/ceac/

Form DS-260: Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration Application
- Required for foreign nationals applying for a family-based green card from abroad
- Accessed through CEAC after submitting Form DS-261 and paying required fees

National Visa Center (NVC) Process:
1. NVC sends a welcome letter with case identification number, beneficiary ID number, and invoice number
2. Complete online forms and pay fees on the CEAC website
3. File DS-260 and DS-261 after NVC begins processing your case

Filing Form DS-261:
1. Sign in to CEAC with the case number from the NVC welcome letter
2. Choose an agent for communication
3. Pay required fees: $325 for immigrant visa application processing, $120 for Affidavit of Support (if applicable)

Filing Form DS-260:
- Requires case identification number, beneficiary ID number, and invoice number
- Includes questions about:
- Biographical information
- Address history
- Social media accounts
- Family members
- Previous U.S. travel
- Work and education history
- Medical history
- Admissibility questions

Supporting Documents:
- Applicant: Proof of nationality, marriage certificate, military record (if applicable), police clearance letters (if applicable)
