M-1 Visa
Enter the U.S. for vocational or technical training under the M‑1 visa, designed for students enrolled full-time at SEVP-certified trade or non-academic schools.

Who is the Visa for?
Non‑U.S. citizens attending vocational, technical, or non-academic programs through institutions authorized by SEVP and capable of issuing Form I‑20.

Eligibility Requirements
Must have acceptance from an SEVP-certified institution and receive a Form I‑20.
Must demonstrate financial ability to cover full tuition and living expenses.
Must maintain full-time enrollment: typically 18 classroom hours per week (or 22 for shop/lab-based programs), or at least 12 credit hours per term at junior/community colleges.
Visa Duration:
Valid for the duration of the program, plus:
Up to 6 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT), and
An additional 30-day departure period.
Total stay may not exceed 1 year, unless extended for compelling educational or medical reasons.
Processing Time:
School acceptance + Form I-20 issuance: Usually a few weeks
Consular processing (DS-160 + interview): ~4–6 weeks (varies by embassy/consulate)
Overall: Typically 1–3 months
