The Department of Homeland Security extended Temporary Protected Status for Ukraine for 18 months

DHS Extends Temporary Protected Status for Ukrainians Amid Ongoing Conflict

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukrainian nationals, providing continued protection for approximately 103,700 beneficiaries in response to the persistent armed conflict in their homeland.

The extension, which runs from April 20, 2025, through October 19, 2026, comes as Ukraine continues to grapple with the devastating impact of Russia's military invasion. This decision reflects the Biden administration's commitment to supporting Ukrainians displaced by the ongoing conflict, which has resulted in widespread civilian casualties and significant infrastructure damage throughout the country.

"The ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary conditions in Ukraine make it unsafe for Ukrainian nationals and habitual residents to return," said the Secretary of Homeland Security. "This TPS extension ensures that these individuals can continue to live and work safely in the United States as their homeland faces unprecedented challenges."

Under the extension, eligible individuals must have continuously resided in the United States since August 16, 2023. Current beneficiaries seeking to extend their status must re-register during a 60-day period running from January 17, 2025, through March 18, 2025. To streamline the transition, Employment Authorization Documents have been automatically extended through April 19, 2026, ensuring that beneficiaries can maintain continuous work authorization.

The extension comes in response to several critical factors that continue to affect Ukraine, including:

  • Expanded Russian military operations
  • Documented war crimes
  • Extensive damage to civilian infrastructure
  • An ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting millions
  • Widespread displacement of civilians

For the Ukrainian-American community, this extension provides crucial stability. "This decision offers peace of mind to thousands of Ukrainians who have made temporary homes in the United States," noted Maria Kozak, a community organizer working with Ukrainian refugees. "Many of these individuals are contributing significantly to their American communities while maintaining hope for eventual peace in Ukraine."

The re-registration process requires eligible individuals to submit necessary documentation to verify their continued eligibility. Immigration advocates recommend that current TPS holders begin preparing their documentation well in advance of the re-registration deadline to ensure a smooth process.

Employers should note that this extension includes automatic extension of employment authorization documents, allowing for continuous employment authorization for eligible individuals. The DHS has provided specific guidance for employers regarding document verification procedures during this transition period.

Support services and legal aid organizations across the country are preparing to assist eligible individuals with the re-registration process. Many organizations are offering free or low-cost assistance to help ensure that all eligible Ukrainians can maintain their protected status.

This extension aligns with similar humanitarian measures implemented by other countries in response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. It reflects the international community's continued recognition of the severe conditions that make return to Ukraine untenable for many of its citizens at this time.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, this TPS extension provides a crucial safety net for thousands of Ukrainians in the United States. It allows them to maintain stable lives and continue contributing to their American communities while their homeland works toward recovery and reconstruction.
